That's a really weird insertion of a character. "Cai Wenji returns to her homeland" is a powerful imagery that has been the subject of countless works of art throughout Chinese culture and remains a pivotal theme in Chinese literature.

Remember, she's performing in front of people who have marched to war. With just a single dance and causing homesickness in their hearts, they are subtly influenced in wanting to go back home and effectively end the war. How far-reaching this influence will be is unknown, but a sudden shift of emotions can have a profound effect in their future decisions.

Liar already explain the why, but the flashbacks after "Diao Chan"/Xiao Meng's dance way back in chapter 13 might help explain the feeling of homesickness better.

Why does everyone has to be related to Sima Yi anyway? And I don't remember Cai Yan being a dancer; she was known for her poems and her ability to recall her father's lost works + Cao Cao rescuing her.
