I kinda hate this trope where the mentor type character goes full tilt to "test" the mc. Like, what would you have done if he wasn't actually that skilled and didn't block the attacks? he would have just died. Are you stupid?

Exactly, you can only try to convince yourself of too much before you get put off by the story and in this example even when I tried to make up a reason it felt too stupid and forced
