This chapter reminded me of that chinese folktale/joke:
Once upon a time, there was a scholar who fell in love with a young lady. One day, they made a trip, and when it was raining, they went to an empty house to shelter from the rain and stay overnight. There is only one bed in this house. Although the two are in a relationship, they were not in a physical relationship. When the lady worried about the scholar, she shyly invited the scholar to sleep together on the same bed, but in the middle of a pillow wrote a note which said: "if you touch me, you are a beast". As the scholar was a gentleman, he resisted the temptation all night and slept without forcing himself on the lady.
The next morning, the scholar found that the lady had woken up and left, leaving only a note that said: "You are less than a beast."
