As far as I could discern from the explanation, the orbs contain macros for specific spells, so you just have to push mana into them and execute the process to get the spell. But a Mage can't cast any spell that isn't written into the orb already. It was only said once here in the manga, but apparently "Magician" is the term for those who cast without orbs, which means they have to program the spells from scratch every time they cast... so they have more versatility but are far less efficient.
Believe it or not this actually lines up with what alot of what we've send thus far.
You can/anyone can confirm this via
the last two chapters of Operation Shock and Awe approx. when Albon thinks that they have intel on a operational orb. Only to get cut down there. This is pretty good cooperative espionage.
