So orbs make spells easy but simple? Does that mean all kinds of varied magic like fireballs or polymorphing are possible if the mage is experienced enough?

As far as I could discern from the explanation, the orbs contain macros for specific spells, so you just have to push mana into them and execute the process to get the spell. But a Mage can't cast any spell that isn't written into the orb already. It was only said once here in the manga, but apparently "Magician" is the term for those who cast without orbs, which means they have to program the spells from scratch every time they cast... so they have more versatility but are far less efficient.
