I actually like when mcs start out a bit shitty. It means a lot more when people grow into something greater rather than being a saint from the get go. At this point in time he's an asshole with a gambling addiction, but he did a heck of a lot to support his ex in the past and sacrificed himself in the future. At this moment he's a piece of shit, but he's far from irredeemable. The author has clearly alluded to that. Not for everyone, I get that, but it's disappointing to see people not empathizing somewhat with his character and hoping for his (hopefully quick) growth.
