This is a series written in 1967. If anything, it’s series like Volcanic Age that are based on this.

These are considered historical fiction, so they are rooted in real(ish) historical settings, although how they are depicted, the relationships, etc. are often really the author’s imagery. The thing is that this author (Jin Yong), among a few others, are so prohiminent authors that popularized the genre that their particular depiction of Wulin/Murim (Murim would be the Korean translation) that it became pop culture. Like it’s so popular that a whole generation or two all know about these series, and they have been adapted into all kinds of different medias many times again. (I don’t personally know how much of it is real tho, and how much of it is popularized fiction).

But that’s why a lot of these series that came after share a common background with the same sects, relationships, etc. even though often with different characters. Volcanic Age wouldn’t be the first series to have its own depiction of the same factions, locations, political struggle. As for this webcomic here, it is but one of the many adaptations that exists of the original novel of the Smiling Proud Wanderer. (I have to add that it’s not the only novel he has written, in the same settings and sometimes in the same shared universe)

so all i can say is that what happened so far (up to ch 24) is all captured in the description of one of the previous serializations,
wouldn't have understood shit cuz the description of this version is plain useless......
srsly, this way it is bound to get a bad rating that could have been avoided if only a proper description was written

"[Based on the series of novels by acclaimed wuxia author, Jin Yong, the comic's initial part of the story revolves around a highly coveted manual containing a powerful martial arts technique known as the "Evil Exorcising Swordplay". The manual is an heirloom of the Lin family, who run the Fortune Prestige Agency, a private security and escorting service in Fuzhou. Yu Canghai, the leader of the Qingcheng Sect, leads his followers to massacre the Lins and attempts to seize the manual for himself, but does not find it. Lin Pingzhi, the sole survivor from the Lin family, is saved by Yue Buqun, the head of the Mount Hua Sect, which is a member of the Five Mountains Sword Sects Alliance. Yue Buqun accepts Lin Pingzhi as an apprentice and trains him in swordplay.

Meanwhile, Yue Buqun's most senior student, Linghu Chong, an orphaned, happy-go-lucky and honourable swordsman who has a penchant for alcohol finds himself befriending the notorious bandit Tian Boguang and saves Yilin, a nun from the (North) Mount Heng Sect, from Tian's lecherous advances.

However, that is just the beginning of a series of escalating conflicts as various individuals take to extreme measures to attain the manual as well as achieve their personal goals.]"

Oh god, isn't that laughing in the wind!
It's my favorite such a great story!
I recommend watching the drama!

Ok, the beginning is a bit awkward..as obviously there is some cut here and there to match a webtoon structure.

The start of the story is random,
take it as the introduction of our hero Linghu
He's part of the "chivalrous" "good" faction (composed of 5 sect)

As he wander around he met a young nun about to get raped from an infamous rapist Tian and while he want to save her he can't really since he's weaker than him.
The fight is cut but basically he lost and Tian pursue the nun and bring her to a tavern, where Linghu in his pursue find him again, and try by every way to save the nun,
proposing a drinking contest (since he want win in a fight). Tian at the end of chapter 4 propose they marry, but it's actually to make thing difficult, shame the nun and our hero.

This start is really to introduce our hero, Yiling (the nun one of the heroine) and Tian (who will be a recurrent char in the story).
There is no real link to the plot, the plot start later as he met and old man from the evil faction and help him out and get in a fight between the good and evil faction.

This story overall is about good and evil, the world is split between the evil faction and the good faction, Linghu while being part of the "good" faction is an open minded man.
While most of the people of the good faction are narrow minded wanting to exterminate all evil on earth.

Thing is Linghu during his travel will meet people from the evil faction that are just eccentric and people from the good faction who are..hypocrite.
Mixing up his real value in this world. As there is no evil or good but just human and their distorted nature.

People say this series is what started the whole wuxia genre. I'm really surprised to hear that, because holy shit this is bad. If true, series like Volcanic Age being based on this is really a case of dragging gold from dross.

@ninjadork It’s not *the* series that started the wuxia genre. Just one of them that made it popular (and certainly, the author is much more known for some other series than this one... are mostly in a shared universe tho)
In the same way that you can’t say Harry Potter or the Lord I’d the Rings is the first of its genre, but certainly their presence has greatly influenced a lot of elements in fantasy literature. I’d say a somewhat similar parallel would be like Alice in Wonderland being the inspiration for spin offs that has very little to do with the original, but uses the same bases for their characters / locations (and builds on it with their own interpretation).

And jeebus, it’s made in the end 1960s, something that certainly doesn’t feel the same in the age of mass media. From the same perspective, there’s a lot of old films from, say, the 60’s, that are not impressive at all when viewed now because of how things have evolved, but were the pioneers for their time and we’re critical in inspiring the many good ones we have today.

So ive been reading to chapter 25 and i feel so overwhelmed. So many character, plot, and back story that i cant focus on the story. More over this manhua only has 15pages per chapter. So there isnt a lot of story explained.
So my question is this, is there supposed to be a prequel to this?

Edit: I tried to read more till chapter 32. In just 5 chapter this manhua introduced another arc without giving a satisfying conclusion to prior arc. Dropped and 3 star.
