This is a very unfortunate situation. I'm guessing Muller feels partially responsible for the tragedy as he confessed very easily and was ready to accept punishment. Otherwise, using his station and reputation he could have easily denied the accusations. The thing is, while usually it is important to take responsibility for his actions, he's left Sienna and Alas in a more vulnerable position. He's one of their biggest supporters and ally. If he's gone, it makes their side weaker and easier prey for the queen who wants them out of the way. Not to mention, once convicted as a traitor, his close association with the twins could also be used against them. Especially for Alas this is a tough spot. On the one hand he wants to save his friend but at the same time if he hopes to have any chance of keeping the throne (and away from the corrupt queen and son) he needs the court on his side. I'm sure he could have made a good argument to excuse the accusations against Muller if not for the fact Muller already confessed.
