That does apparently mean 'mama' - in French. Or at least I've seen a character with a French accent use that word to affectionately refer to his late mother.

That's correct, as far as my French goes, but in this case it's more like a family-like nickname (maman and musume) trying to look like an actual family but aren't a real one, actually.
