To be fair, "not wanting to be caught up in royal succession bullshit" is one of the best excuses for pretending to be useless. When one of your siblings end up as the Emperor, they will clear out (execute) everyone who can pose a threat to themselves- but will likely spare the useless ones and give them a title or something since leaving harmless siblings alive is good for deflecting some of the bad PR from killing your siblings.
