To be fair, of the two class 4 mages, she was the more obvious pick, he did seem somewhat nervous which could indicate quite a few different things when it comes to a mage, like lack of confidence in his skills, hiding something, health issues or a "need" to get picked (like to climb in standing or get close to the prince for one reason or another), while she seemed calm and collected, ie didn't seem to be hiding anything, not doubting her skills, no ambitious drive to get picked etc.

It's already been stated that these lives take place in different worlds most often. Chances are that magic differs between these worlds. Apparently he didn't use magic, but Qi for the moments where he was floating and shit. Either way I don't get why this one inconsistency made you have a pissy baby fit in the comment section lmao.
