Shitsmell comes at the time you sow new grain (to improve soil quality) so for like a week in the spring and autumn. In the first place do you see Japan as a grain growing country or rice growing one (for which you flood)?

And people burning things starts usually at the end of summer and lasts till end of spring (or until the city hall permits it).

If you do it legally you burn from noon until evening, if you do it illegally you start at the evening (so others wont see the smoke).

So in no fucking way can you feel smoke nor shitsmell at 3 in the night during summer when this dude moved to these vixens. (Iirc at least, correct me if i remembered the season wrong)
