Back then, or at least in this settings, most people probably die by 40 from adventuring + constant attack under monsters + diseases. Considering that, 14/40 is like 35% of their life. Right now, life expectancy is around 70 to 80 in some countries. But menopause, on average, is 51 at least in US. So 35% of that is 17.85, or 18. Basically same standard, but normalized to what people are expected to live..

And the accomplice with high magical skills, who was handcuffed just like the person in the escort, wasn't spotted by the knight commander's keen intuition? It’s baffling how this new adventurer, supposedly trying not to stand out, still planned to add a female companion to his routine despite being known for these suspicious activities:

1. Asking the related staff about various aspects of the case.
2. Sneaking in and killing the goblin leader.
3. Sneaking past the guards to talk with the thieves guild master, even though he could have entered through the front door to conceal his abilities.
4. Hiring the thieves guild for a task related to the escort mission.

There are so many ways he could be exposed: the two receptionists, the guild master after interviewing everyone involved, the triple female party, and the thieves' guild master, among others. If the guild master were competent and didn't ignore these glaring plot holes, the protagonist would have been caught in no time. His actions are ridiculously careless for someone with assassin-like abilities.
