Ah, so it wasn't the common populace, but the church itself who declared blacksmith as the worst profession.
Since this is the case, isn't it quite obvious that there are some unsavory people at the top? If it was truly the worst profession, taking no action would be obvious, why would they spend any energy on a useless profession? Since they actually took the time to do it, it's pretty much a confirmation that someone there knows at least a bit about blacksmith's true power.
