Oh hey, this is (kind of) one of the few instances where "blood is thicker than water" is used in its original sense: "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb", i.e. the bonds you forge by choice are stronger than the familial bonds you're born with. It works here since they're not his birth family, but rather the family that chose to take him in.
