Think it's trying to say the opposite. That something might be influencing him to go against his cowardly instincts and not let go of her in this life vs the previous ones. He's still a dipshit though so it's just making him a thorn in her side.

Hmm. Vasily was indeed a really inadequate man. And not only cowardly.

Vasily in this lifetime finally treated the situation more seriously only after MC adamantly and repeatedly refused to go back to him. Worse, he only asked whether his father really send the hyenas or not until after those multiple rejections. He didn't even bother to ask the first time MC told him even though it's about his love's life. And he dared to say that he loved her.

Vasily is absolutely fascinating because he's portrayed as dense, cowardly, indecisive and irresponsible, but... I don't really see him as a villain. He's weak and flawed, but there's lots of potential for growth here, under right circumstances.
Being a ML is out of the question of course, but a friend / ally / ex who doesn't mind coming to your help from time to time? Ah, one can dream.
