What was he actually planning to do?

Unlike his father who's aware and intentionally do evil things, it looks like Vasily didn't realize that what he was complicit to evil because he was ignorant to the truth. Well, maybe after he struggle and learn the rough life on the street, he would become a better man. That'd be a good character development.
