The whole point of this manga (like several others from this author) is centering around a troublesome girl messing with a guy's feeling.
In that way, the male lead HAS to be simp and pathetic to allow this kind of plot. Better look this manga with such an angle, cause the female lead is actually very funny with this.

That's totally different from the stupid rental loser we all know where the point is supposed to be a romance.

that's an intro hook at best, not a story. it has to develop from there to be a story. that requires the mc to develop and man up, or else it's bad & not true to life & human nature

you can have SoL or whatever with little character development, but you can't write something like this without character development, because a dynamic like this just calls out to be resolved, it can't just keep going, that's fundamentally unsatisfying, like a melody that never resolves.
