To be fair, he did specify evening and she didn't show until dark out which is usually night. I think people are mainly upset that she clearly has feelings and read the message but purposely chose to fuck with him. If someone who you are interested in(or at the very least friendly with) messages you for a date, it's a dick-move to ghost them.

I’d say Insomniac’s version of MJ was a lot worse.
• She literally used Peter to get ahead in her career, more than once.
• Voluntarily puts herself in serious danger, more than once…
• Wrote a hit piece on Peter when she knew he genuinely tried to protect her. While also forgetting all of the times he’s saved her life, especially after their breakup.
• No Felicia (she’s already in another relationship…) or Gwen (doesn’t exist) to provide poor Peter any form of salvation from this manipulative monster.
• Villains always use lethal weapons on Peter and Miles, but with MJ they only use non-lethal weapons or approaches. Despite the fact that MJ has constantly proven to villains she’s an annoying problem, keeping her alive accomplishes nothing. Makes even less sense with Kraven and his blood thirsty gang.
• She aired out Peter’s dirty laundry to the whole neighborhood and anyone within earshot. And he still loves her…
• And worst of all, MJ took way, and I mean way too much screen time on Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2, would’ve loved to see more of Venom…

I know this manga with fictional characters with things exaggerated for entertainment purposes but:
Amatella was not ready for a relationship and likely was confusing feelings of admiration for those of romantic attraction. This is not to say that I don't think they wouldn't have been able to get to a healthy romantic relationship, but Amatella needed to work on socializing, being her own person, and not clinging to/throwing herself at the first person to give her attention and validation by trying to become what she thinks they want.
She also was attracted to "Dark Knight Sensei" not Yuuta, and she definitely would have needed to get to the point she could separate them.

tl;dr: You are correct he very much chose the wrong girl. He could have fixed her.
