I was waiting for this black-haired kid to be scum or something but he seems like a nice and sincere enough bloke.

Which is enough to make me stop here, honestly. The rules and genre conventions say she's going to end up with the delinquent, given the plot summary. It'd be fine if her and black-haired kid actually just think of each other as friends, but we know the genre and it's about ten times more likely that somebody's going to get their heart broken.

All of which is to say, I was totally up for an "opposites attract" rough-and-tumble romance—but a well-fleshed out and empathetic childhood friend on the other end of a love triangle in such a story? It just... leaves such a bad taste in the mouth.
