One glaring problem with Kodama's claims is that he assumes that 'This Man' takes hostages, which he doesn't and there's no reason to do so.
For some reason no character found that to be odd.

Isn't that because he is showing Hakaru as 'This man' and Hoshiko as hostage?
But you're right, the first idea was that 'This man' kill his victims, not that take them as hostages or something

Since the legend says that if you actually see one (This Man), he will come and kill you, it makes claims about Hakaru even more stupid.
Maybe it's kind of a reference that audience of some popular youtubers can be that stupid and believe all sorts of baseless statements.
