I hope the newborn grows up to be a good person, and I hope the former prince/king remarries to a bakery owner or something.

He had to bribe people to tell the truth while multiple cities worth of people were on the line, there was a 100% method to tell if they were lying to the face of royalty, and he still had 99% of them keep their mouths shut. None of those people would have said a damn thing without circumstances forcing them to.

It’s definitely surprising they killed her. That’s a massive weakness for the kingdom now that practically makes them a vassal state and even as an evil saint it still implies that a major god had her back enough to grant her purification magic strong enough to be a saint. That country is screwed six ways to Sunday as one of the possible consequences of enacting justice is that they just pissed off a god.
He only mentioned bribery and threats when it came to those who worked for her family. When it came time to investigate the constant bullying that was seemingly happening at the academy, he didn’t mention needing to bribe anyone when it came to investigating the academy. It seemed more like there were rumors that everyone was spreading about her bullying her sister and people believed them but nobody had seen it themselves.

as for killing her, yes they’re basically s vassal now but only until a new saint is born in the country. Three existed there recently so it doesn’t seem like it’ll take an absurd amount of time. In contrast, if they’d let the evil sister live, it’d make the royal family look weak and corrupt and would fully tick off this new other country where mc is overwhelmingly beloved and queen. I’m not really sure what the god Is thinking there but clearly mc had stronger magic and got stronger through this journey so she was in the right. Maybe if the sister could compete with her magic it’d be a different story but this way they just need to grovle A bit to their neighbors for maybe 10-20 years.

Man, when did the Tragic Heroine turned into villainess. Then again, most of the chapters here are as such. :pacman:
A weakness of most villainess stories is that they rarely portray a villainess. They just have a heroine who is baselessly accused of being cruel.

Yeah but he clearly did no research into those accusations against his wife since nobody actually saw her doing the crimes. He could’ve figured it out on his own if he tried but he didn’t care about his fiancé enough to do that.
He had witnesses the first time around. Everyone in her household testified that she hurt the prince's fiancee. When it came to the holy trial, however, they couldn't lie anymore. Not only would lies be immediately revealed, but the fate of their country depended on the truth. So they were forced to admit to the abuse.
That’s actually kinda surprising since she was the only one in that country with purification magic. But I guess it’d be an international incident if they let her live given her crimes
It's weird that the sister would not go ahead and purify it herself when she saw how things were going. Supposedly she was not doing it due to her health, but it's far worse for your health to lose your head. Unless her having holy powers was also a lie, but it's hard to believe they were able to fool the church too into declaring her a saintess.

he wasn't king after he married the step sister, they even say by the end the former crown princess and her family were punished and that Kaizen renounce his claim to the throne, meaning he wasn't king yet, also it would be weird to sent a king as an envoy.
It's also pretty weird to send the guy who condemned her to ask for her help. Could they not have sent anyone else? It's not like they had some kind of relationship before he exiled her either.

I would have liked a bit more closure on why everyone hated her. Or at least why her father hated her, which is all that really matters. Everyone else followed the lead of the head of the house.

From bits in the story, I think we can tell that saintresses are rare but not a single person per country type situation.
The FMC is the highest ranking saintress in the Goddesses' church, so that implied that there are more than one (lower ranked ones) for that religion, in the country.
The step-sister was recognised as a saintress during her school days two plus years ago but there would already be an existing saintress (that died) for the country.

Maybe what was needed since thing got bad with the old saintress dying and the new one (step-sister) being unable to perform her duties is a high ranked saintress that can purify a whole city? While afterwards less powerful saintresses can maintain things on a daily basis.

(That or maybe the world building is inconsistant since this is a one chapter story)

Thank you for the translations!!! It was fun to see this anthology get revived ^__^

I quite liked this one! Unlike some other chapters, this one felt succinct and wrapped up well. Like, a proper oneshot rather than a thinly veiled elevator pitch for a serialized story. Gaps in logic/plot aside, I appreciate how the judgment truths were presented and (partially) became the story’s framing device. Good stuff!! 👍

witnesses at her household but not one at the school. Not even some crony of the sister who was willing to collaborate her story.

I feel like this dude must have kept his wife in the dark about this. In the beginning, it’d make sense that he wouldn’t want her to know that he was going to go see her abusive sister To beg for help. He could have even ordered the servants not to tell her. And from there as things got revealed, he could’ve just kept that going on. Forbid anyone from telling her what was happening or that public opinion was turning against her. She might’ve noticed that her servants were starting to glare at her But likely wouldn’t have guessed the cause

Holy cow. This one is really well written. It made me think of those old fairy tales where the heroine had to through different tests.

Thank you for the translation

Ey this one wasn't too bad. The MC actually dealt with the issue with her own power instead of Just Some Guy swooping in and solving everything
I was definitely very scared that when she talked about accepting the other King's proposal that somehow he thought of the scheme. Thankfully, no, she's just talking about the actual marriage proposal and the plan to aid his kingdom. It was aggravating to see so many of these chapters have a MC who did not do anything at all.
The whole appeal of a villainess, to me, is that they'll do something unlike a typical otome protag who does rely on her suitors. But these stories leaned too hard on otome power dynamics which was disappointing. This one, this one was very good. The comparisons to a fairy tale was apt, she was the main driving force and the punishment was satisfying.
It's no wonder they kept this for the end.

This was most definitely the best story in the volume. The Prince is at least worth of praise for pushing forward with the contract and not trying to cover anything up. He seems like a guy with some morals. He just was blind to the faults of the one he loved.
Indeed. He even stepped out of the succession line to take care of his kid, and probably to prevent the child from getting intermingled in court politics in the future too. Now that's some dedication.

And remember, this whole story started because he didn't want to push his wife who had just gone through labor. Think about it: the actual villainess got a bad end because her husband was too caring towards her. That's peak irony right there. Ancient Greeks would weep before this masterpiece.

are you talking about the other chapter of this volume or this anthology in general??, because most of the volumes are villainess focused with the points you're saying.

This is a very interesting way of delivering the twists. I thought I have seen everything the villainess subgenre has offered.

They couldn't not kill her. She actively harmed a genuine Saintess who in the end saved probably most of the population of their kingdom. Even if you ignore the secular crimes that veer dangerously close to outright high treason, ignoring that type of religious crime or "crime" would mean that the royal family would spend the rest of their days fearing a religious rebellion or if the Church is particularly organised and international, a crusade.

There's also the issue that either there's a singular god who doesn't care about their saintesses or their are multiple. The former means you are fine, the latter means you're upsetting a god either way so you may as well only upset a god instead of a god and your kingdom.

I like that the prince in this one learned the truth and accepted it. He showed some character growth that's rare for ex-fiancès in villainess stories.

The weakness in this story is that with a perfect lie detector, all they really had to do is submit any initial testimony to the same scrutiny.

For any crime whose punishment is above a certain threshold, allow the accused to defend themselves before God, with a massive increase in penalty if they are found lying.

"I am innocent of the charges leveled against me"

"TRUE"

Boom. Problem solved.
It's not a huge weakness, easily explained away by her stepsister being recognized as the country's saintess who could prevent the ritual's use since using the ritual would be doubting her credibility. Especially with the stepsister being the majority of the accusations.

The bigger weakness imo is that they imply the Goddess has some control over your total mana and mana regen for holy magic, and yet the stepsister was still able to cast enough holy magic to be considered a saintess during all those abuse activities.
