Historical writings are usually pretty accurate toward the actual events themselves but motivations and reasons can be heavily affected by biases. The fact that someone did something is correct but why they did it is usually not entirely reliable.

Even that is unreliable because sometimes we attribute the writing to a person but it turns out to just be a scribe or translation error.
