I think it wasn't necessary to tell the story in a not chronological order. It is obvious that she won't die, so the flashback had no worth. Even with the gloves there is a real risk to it, therefore even with the knowledge of her having the gloves the reader would understand that she is afraid of dying. Then you could add the great part of her characterization and development and end the chapter the same way.
