I'm gonna go on a tangent here. Don't let this fool you - I enjoy this series, and thanks for translating!

That being said, the teacher really *is* fucking insane; his entire explanation makes still no sense.

So, shadows try to kill people. That's bad. Humans killing humans - that is also bad, so dear teacher will not do that. But: You can't distinguish between the shadow and the human. So he will just kill one anyway... even if there is a 50% chance of killing a human rather than a non-human shadow, which, by even his demented standards, should be BAD. He does it anyway. Because... why again? Oh, right, his family became a mess because of shadows. So he is literally killing humans - even by his own definition - or at the very least risking that for his personal desires. So much for not murdering if there is "even a 1% chance of you being a human".

And: Either the shadow and the human hash it out and one kills the other.... or the teacher steps in and kills one or the other. The end-result doesn't change... except that in the later case, you have crazy guy who has seemingly 0 qualms about killing human-look-alikes, and that is just as scary as someone who has no problems killing humans, especially since we have established that the 2 can't be differentiated.

Fucking lackwit. If this was a real person and not a fictional character , the guy would be either incredibly, laughably stupid or simply someone who simply wants to kill without admitting it. I mean, it's a murderers wet dream, right? People who just disappear with no trace if they die, and no one goes even missing... it's the perfect crime.

Not that I think that this is what the author is trying to say. The entire thing is symbolic, or allegoric? Fuck me if I know the difference, but it's not meant to be taken at a surface level.

The teachers cousins shadow not just symbolizes her wish to die, but also her grief and mental issues in general. The failing family can't cope with it - because mental illness is still not accepted or dismissed in many parts of most societies, so many simply lack the resources and awareness to do so - and falls apart; this puts stress on all members. So they force her to repress her issues and hide them - which is symbolized by her being chained and imprisioned in the barn.

Of course, repressing negative emotions doesn't work. Neither the aunts method - blindly following what others tell her, joining a cult, no longer thinking for herself nor trying to treat her daughter as human - nor the teachers method - shutting her down if she acts up (killing her) - actually deal with the underlying problem, so she just keeps reappearing no matter how often she gets killed.

And the teachers murdering of others shadows is basically just the same thing - hating and dismissing others for having their own troubles and not putting up a strong front their entire lives, just like he does with his cousin.

And as for why shadows and originals try to kill each other - it's self-loathing. The originals try to repress their problems - literally killing themselves - and the shadows respond in kind, because, well, they're the same person.

@Njin first of YAY finally someone to discuss this over, other than the translator
second of, I agree the teacher si a goddamn psycho and all you wrote, except for the part about the originals and shadows wanting to kill each other

It's not that EVERY original-shadow pair wants to kill one another, in the case of our MC, Yu Ha Na, he only wanted to kill Yu Ee at first BECAUSE the teacher put this whole oooh she'll kill you if you don't kill her idea in her mind. We also saw, in the case of Shin Woo, his shadow did appear because of his depression and anxiety iirc, BUT we see when he tells the story of the two of them, that the shadow never once wanted to kill the original, in fact, he fought the urge even. After all, he maybe was brought to this world to kill his original, but he fought against it cause he knew that Shin Woo deserved to live.

With Mi Rae as well, we do not see that her hadowants to kill the original, because that, in fact, isn't her desire. You have to take into consideration here that theshadowscome from desires. So, if you have someone, like Shin Woo and Ah Rah (the cousin) who want to just die and end their life, their shadow will want to kill them (at least at first). In cases of Yu Ha Na, her show was born, iirc, out of her desire to not see more deaths? Or, I guess to forget the acre he had witnessed, something like that.

And, a little spoiler here about Mi Rae:
her desire was actually related to her father and not herself. it's something along the lines of wanting to kill her abusive father
so, again, no wish to hurt the original.

I go about this for ages haha, if you wanna chat more, come join the traumerei discord <3
