The difference with the 90's is that now smartphones play a HUGE part in socialization. And in highschool not having a tool as common as a phone would surely get you isolated.
You're socialising but mostly with people you probably will never see, like we're doing now, while limiting face-to-face interaction.
Sure you can multitask and type while you talk with friends whith screen plastered to your face, but I'll drop the conversation if I've seen that...
There's not enough time for both.
Sadly, there's still demand of paper books, which is the only thing really a smartphone really superior in school. Just carrying every single one and doing tests you can easily check digitally by a teacher is so enjoyable, but not everywhere...
