It's not necessarily too unrealistic. He's a broken man anyway, plus Kotori was away for a considerable amount of time, so he got used to being alone for a while as it was. I reckon it wouldn't have been so easy if she had been missing only for a day or two. Now the scumbag father already had time to think and adjust. He never could get over his wife's death at all, which is why he both hated and loved Kotori, who reminded him of the dead wife, yet they were stuck together. Sometimes mentally troubled people stick to an unfavourable situation even for years simply because they can't take the first step to change their life. A sudden external factor may force them to take the step.
