Does Japan have different standards than the United States regarding patient confidentiality? I feel like you see healthcare workers blabbing about their patients to third parties quite a bit in manga. Or is it a willing suspension of disbelief thing used as a convenient way to add context to the plot? I guess it could just be a lack of awareness from some writers.

this healthcare data wasn’t specifically codified as confidential in Japan until 2015. Also, prior to that year data privacy laws only applied to databases containing 5000+ individuals. I believe Tokyo Kaido began publication in 2009, so depending on how many previous patients the clinic has had, the doc wasn’t breaking the law. I’d still say it’s unethical though.
