Love this manga. I’ve been looking for manga based more on the arts or any activity based and this was really good!
Although I have some problems with the authours depiction of a “returnee” character, one that has experienced life out side of their home country, especially Canada.
His plain looks and mild temperament is fine and all, but he’s sooo thoroughly Japanese, like He’s such a stereotypical japanese.
I’m not a “returnee” but am an Asian that was born and raised in Britain. So I understand this.
Of course Asians raised elsewhere will all have different characters etc.
But you will still take in certain manners, mindset, culture, and common sense from both countries, especially if you grew up in it sincerely your were a child.
And if he really has lived there for so long since he was a child, there should be a sense of having two Homelands. In that sense he’s not really a “foreign japanese in Canada” but rather a “Canadian-Japanese citizen”.
This character is plain, and that’s fine, but the authour couldn’t present the mixed culture image, a person who lived in two worlds, would have.
At at the very least, I feel that he or she, has not even tried.
