I wonder if there can be another consequence for those getting send out, maybe they'll return safely and lose their balloon head but "doomed" to be forever in their town. Like the losing or gaining a lump in the previous chapter. Maybe their balloon head is their potential of doing well in their life/job/work?

So it seems like this is a town-wide curse. Something that happened in the past has cause people to be regularly sacrificed.
Although if departure is how people become tageted, why is a little kid a target too? I don't think he's going to be heading to college or anything for a while.

I think those people were normal until they get infected/cursed at some point. When they are ripe and ready to get harvested, they will set on a journey to normal people's eyes but actually will get eaten by a deity or something.

The tourist who seems to be in the know is the most interesting character so far - there's something sinister about how smug he appears, but the fact that he's a regular human who seems aware of what's going on would make you think he's one of the good guys... Perhaps, like in the folk story they talked about, he's a metaphorical "old man" who has come to these dancing demons to have his "lump removed" - ergo, wants to join them to gain something from them.

I feel like in the throes of a supernatural story, a 'genius' wouldn't necessarily fare too well without some kinda help/backup , esp since you can't 'normally' fight against a ghost/monster, versus like, somehow having some kinda exorcist blood in you or working together with one

Yeah hopefully even a 'normal'/average person would be able to get some makeshift tools to fight if not prep or so if the story message is like "the power of teamwork" or so/humanity against a monster

There's something really menacing about the way the departing people all give the same exact farewell.... its one of the things that made me feel uneasy about the sister before the reveal. I wonder for how long the sister'd been like that.....
