Japanese market can be fairly different for many instruments, as it is in many countries. In mine for example there are only one or two options under a 1000 bucks, one of which is a kids model (though admittedly she IS a kid), and even those are over 800 bucks. For a kid that is hard to get. You also basically never see them for sale as used outside of "the circles", they rarely show up in music stores (guitarist and bassist myself, I like to check the used stuff), when they do they're usually expensive and mostly seem to pass hands between music school students etc. (Told by a saxophonist buddy.)

Agree that they probably could do more research on many aspects, but saxes can be rare and expensive in many places.

You want a perfectly good cheap used accordion or bayan tho? No problem!

Tbf I do sort of understand where she's coming from. Yeah she definitely could have accepted the compliment more gracefully. But I also understand her feeling of "You don't play music, you don't know what's hard or impressive or what my actual skill level is." It's still nice to have people compliment you, but it means a LOT more when it's somebody who you know is skilled and you respect their skills. Because then you know they truly understand your abilities and are complimenting you with that full knowledge and understanding.

Pardon me for dick-riding for a second here, but this is something I like about The Dooo. He has expensive guitars that he plays, but he went out of his way to buy a Hello Kitty guitar, a ukulele, and a few other less expensive options to show his viewers that you can still shred without having to drop fat stacks of cash. And while it rarely got put into his videos, he has had mini jam sessions with fans, both in CoD lobbies and over Omegle, because he loves seeing more people get into music, and especially guitars.

I could absolutely see the point of only wanting praise from the Saxophone version of The Dooo, because then you're getting praise from a decently well known member of the same kind of circles you play in. But if THAT was what she was looking for, she still came out of this looking like a bitch.

If I were in her shoes, I'd have said something like "thank you, but I won't feel like I've made progress until my saxophone senpai has acknowledged my work."
