I don't remember saying that but yeah, it's true. we can't meet their quality standards. i'm not finding n1,n2 translators and native americans who speak english for pr. also, if our quality is bad, feel free to point it out. there can be errors cuz we aren't flawless. so i'd be grateful if you could point out the errors that needs corrections.
This doesn't really make you look good. Saying 'we know it's bad but we released it anyway' isn't a great look, and nor is 'please do our PR for us' when you have a PR person credited on your page! I kinda feel bad for them now! You're basically just saying 'yeah this person's work is bad!'
That said, I do really appreciate that this scans and reads better than literally any MTL slop out there. Like I'll take actual work and effort over AI any day, so thanks for that. I would like to see people improve in general so here's a native english speaker's PR.
(As a disclaimer I do not have the raws and do not know Japanese well, so this feedback is solely on the English in the chapter.)
GENERAL NOTES
- I think the biggest thing that stands out isn't easy to put into words and it isn't easy to capture in examples, but I'll try to point it out as I move through the chapter. As I read through it, the dialog feels a bit stiff. It's not necessarily gramatically wrong, it's not obviously incorrect or anything, it's just not
quite how a native speaker would put things or doesn't quite flow.
SPECIFIC PANELS
2.2 - I looked back through some of your other work and you're kinda fond of using fonts that become difficult to see. I completely missd the 'hot spring inn' text first time around because it blends right into the panel. (Though, hey, great redraw job there.)
3.5 - This bubble got really muddled. Not only it is nigh-impossible to see on my monitor let alone a smartphone, the various clauses got kinda mixed up. Is the bath on the fifteenth floor? Is the place where you have to make a reservation on the fifteenth floor? You could definitely condense this. I could even make the argument that the reader doesn't
really need to know the place is 15 stories tall so you could just drop it. (Also a slight grammar slip: 'Our hotel provide private baths which is' -> 'Our hotel provides private baths which are')
3.5 cont - Putting all that together I'd personally do something like 'We also provide open-air baths on the top floor. Would you like to make a reservation?' You don't need to mention that a reservation is required, it's implied by her next question, you don't have the slightly clunky 'the fifteenth floor, the top floor' at the end of the sentence. If the floor number matters or if that's too much information removed then you might need more, but that's what I'd go with. (Also she's speaking 'as' the hotel staff, so you can just use 'we'.)
3.6 - 'Are there any times when both the men and women's baths are open?' - This is one of those lines that caught me as being a bit stiff and I think it might be a translated in a bit of a general sense? From context, I feel that she's asking about when men and women can both use the rooftop baths, with the idea that they both want to bathe at the same time. I think you could soften this down to something like 'Are there any times that we can both bathe?' (with 'in two different baths' implied by the reaction on the next page.)
4.1 - 'The private open-air bath on the top floor is a mixed bath' - Again, a bit stiff. They've just been talking about this bath - the staff member doesn't have to give it the full description again. 'The open-air baths are mixed baths.' Done.
(4.1 aside: There's a crap piece of English that I think you don't have context for here. 'Bath' is a bath singular, 'Baths' is a bath plural, but 'Baths' can also be 'a facility where you bathe' which is why I'm using it here. Sorry, English sucks.)
4.3/4.4 - '... separate reservations...' - This word doesn't quite feel right. Realistically, since there's nothing to stop only one person using the bath, they're talking about a room making multiple reservations in a given evening. 'multiple reservations' probably makes more sense, but it also means that page 5 doesn't happen because it's already clear. Chalk it up to manga logic, I guess.
5.1 - 'one person can use it alone too, right?' - two bits of stiffness here - 'use it' and 'one person... alone'. Consider 'Someone can go in on their own, right?'
(also damn 7:30? right after a massive meal? no thanks)
6.1 - 'That's what she said' - literal translation. Try 'So, with that said...' if you want to evoke the meaning, or just 'Well then...'
6.3 - 'I'll use the open-air bath in the room' - Again, we've established the baths are open-air. Just leave it as 'I'll use the bath here'. 'This view's more than good enough too' - English doesn't really need the 'too' on the end of this sentence - another implied word.
7.2 - I'm staring at this panel real suspiciously but I can't think of anything to say on it.
8.3 - '... a garden for strolling...' -> 'scenic garden' (tends to imply the ability to walk through it)
10.5 - 'For us, delicious is more than enough' -> Hmm. This is a bit of a strange panel in general, but this isn't really a phrasing you'd use that I'm aware of? Maybe the intent is something like 'I've never had anything like this before, so all I can say is 'it's delicious'.' That would at least still allow you to bridge to the next page (where the word 'delicious' is important) while maybe flowing a little better?
11.1 - 'that's definitely way too much favoritism' -> I feel like even Naomi wouldn't term it that way. 'that's definitely being far too biased' or similar?
13.1 - 'for your bath reservation' - drop either 'bath' or 'reservation', it was 8 pages ago, we can remember.
16.1 - 'this open-air bath' - drop 'open-air'
From here on out things are pretty much fine imo. Hopefully some of that illustrates what I mean by 'stiff'. It's not easy to put into words especially without being a native speaker, and I want to stress that the chapter is still understandable and that I think you've put work into making it flow.
