Now that you mentioned it, in shoujo, the rival is always another male, which is understandable, because it's basically reverse harem situation.Dude, I know why rivals exist. I'm more so complaining about how the fuck does crazy lesbian rivals even come to fruition considering they literally suck ass from a writing and entertainment perspective. And furthermore, why aren't we getting a gay male love interest for the male MC? We haven't got a legitimately good rival for romances lately unless it's Shoujo because the rest is plagued with annoying lesbian piece of shits. A regular rival works way better than whatever they're tryna cook with this trope.
However, in shounen, it's ... been a while since we have male characters as rivals. Not the other annoying archtype: A dude who full of himself, thinking that the girl should fall for him, but genuinely a rival that have decency that could make readers have a base to support him too.
TBH I don't read that much manga, so my knowledge of such scenario is limited, but Adachi Mitsuru's older mangas usually have that rival. As of modern shounen, I ... can't think any, not my memory is reliable.
I think the yandere yuri character is a refusal from mangaka, or EDITOR to make other important male characters in the series. It's the stupid gacha characters argument: No male characters, because male gamers hate them. With the same principle, add more female characters in shounen romcom, and reduce or even don't add any male characters.
Usually, the sole signficant male is the main character, and the other male characters are: stupid friend, horny friend, asshole hindrance, or NPCs. Oh, there are also the cooler best friends that have better romantic story too.
To the chapter:
This manga is really a mine for SD expression.
