Yeah... I don't think they've ever married before in his past reincarnations, people. I think the idea really is that she only now, in the modern age, finally married him for the first time. In a time when her 'wish' can finally be granted, by an incarnation competent and intelligent enough to make it happen.
She loves him with all her heart, but he's also the one that will allow her to finally rest, when the time comes naturally.
That's what I think, anyway.
Anyway, I'm pretty confident this is about where the anime finally, finally ends. This was the very last segment and scene depicted in the final episode of the four-part finale that focused on his time teaching at the all-girls high school.
There might be little fluff pieces that may fill in a few bits and pieces from some of the episodes, but I'm confident this was the last major bit of lore that was revealed during the anime.
