I'm going to state this again, but Naruse-san is absolutely not competing. Period. He also pretty much completely disappears after this, save for a couple lines in chapter 5.

Nonetheless, it doesn't change the fact that he is, at least for me (and apparently other people), an unneeded and unneccessary character, a waste of the mangaka's energy that could have been better spent on further development of the main characters' relationship, especially in such a short series.
