if it was chitin or whatever there'd be (at least a hint of) a seam at the joints since the hard structural parts and the soft flexible parts have to be composed of different materials, but it's the same unbroken, soft-looking texture the whole way down every time they're drawn, even the cover to vol. 6. at least it's not actually the same color as her skin (the only possible way it could be worse) but idk the way the artist draws the spider limbs makes me think of the limbs of a critically emaciated person with too many joints over a spider, lol, hence the silent hill body horror remark
