i get lowering the toll for your merchants but removing it entirely? this isn't some road toll this is a magical teleport that can get you across the country in a second, some fee should be paid even if only small.
that or increasing the sales taxes because you will miss out on some major cash

It's not that the value of a membership raises exponential. It's that not taking up that offer puts you strongly into disadvantage. It becomes a must. And he is controlling it. He can destroy merchants, simply by excluding them. He improves the commodity circulation, which improves the lives of many people overall, but his gain in power influence and the circumvention of country borders and therefore tolls, will make him the most hated person. Imagine a king that doesn't comply to his demands, e.g. outlaw slavery. "Oh. That's a bummer. Then I guess it's for the best to not step onto each others toes. I'll just close my gate in your kingdom and we do both our thing. That's fine, isn't it?" People in power can't stand one thing. Other people having power over them. I wonder how long it'll take, before they anounce him to be the demon lord and enemy of everything good. My guess is before most people notice, how nice his gates are.

@Rathendar magic world... I assume like most others you have remote enforcement of things you want, meaning the slave cant stab you in the back. when we are talking about the chance to be a billionair and all you have do is take out the top, I would do it, or try and get as much as I can out of it rather then working to make that person richer.

It would be awesome if they made this manga a verse type plot, where we have one story (the main story) following the master of the tower and several other off shoot stories about a merchant/adventurer/slave or summoned servant as the MC of their own plot line would be cool
