Lots of stuff here not to understand. Like, for En to transcend, apparently, he must pass a trial and show that he's past emotion - even mercy. However, his master, who has supposedly transcended in his turn, seems anything but past emotions. Or is it only stuff like pity and mercy that one has to transcend, ambition and greed can stay?

I know it's been years but sennnin 仙人 just refers to immortals/hermits with special powers. There are different levels of sennin. Earthly immortals or chisen 地仙 are lower ranked than heavenly immortals or tensen 天仙. The specifics about how they differ vary across different stories of the xianxia genre.
If you also read Hell's Paradise they also use similar terminology.
