"Bring people that are close to you" bro why didn't they bring in the original squad from the first series? Bring in Chosho, Mitsuhide, Onihei, and Takashi! Hell, Mitsuhide especially. The whole latter half of this series is the conflict between the Yugenshinkage-ryū and the Nadashinkage-ryū, at least mention the Nadashinyō. According to the original series, Nadashinkage is a descendant of the original Nadashinyō, so at the very least it's also tied into the Yugenshinkage.
