The societal standards we have for women when it comes to being fat is so frustrating. Even though women gain weight easier than men on average, they are criticized to an unfair degree compared to the latter. Nobody bats an eye when they see a fat guy, but somehow if a lady just dares to be above average in weight she should feel ashamed? It truly pains me to see a woman having to make changes in her lifestyle and take potentially harmful methods to losing weight just because she gained a few pounds or a colleague made an offhand comment regarding her bodily appearance. This kind of culture permeates everywhere in media, in TV shows, books, and even manga. It only serves to reinforce the oppression of women by upholding outdated norms deeply rooted in misogyny. It would be better if people were more critical about this kind of stuff when they see it.
