The sulfur stink is likely from hydrogen sulfide, which IS where that rotten egg smell comes from that's associated with sulfur. My (off-the-cuff) guess is that it probably just decomposes from elemental sulfur normally, but I do know it often gets added to natural gas as a Warning smell (since Methane is also itself, odorless).
