This kinda reminds me of Touhou the game, with each part/stage being kinda isolated but at the same time not really? Well, that aside, this is pretty nice. Never thought much about pre-spellcard era exorcist, and certainly not the way this is represented.

I wonder how he feels at the end of all this, the weakling that achieve nothing even after all that, but still manage to be honored by a Youkai Sage's present,

I assume it's the old Japanese ideal of honor and duty, like Samurai Bushido I suppose. He felt ashamed at his failure to live up to his peers expectations, and a sense of shame in being the last left alive after his peers and precursors died in their line of duty.
The feeling I got from this was that this was his last expedition to "exercise the yokai" or more realistically it was like an animal going to look for a place to die. He knew he was growing old so he wanted to do his job and see the yokai for what he remembers them being, one last time.

Brutal take on the previous generation of exterminators. Thankfully we live in a modern age now where we can live in harmony with our Youkai waifus.
