He can always send someone else to call the priests. Look, my problem here is that the author gave the hero the tavern so sloppily. I understand that this isn't supposed to be super-realistic. But the hero did magic in front of a bunch of witnesses, confessed to being the Devil to one of them, and just got left alone with an expensive property afterwards without any at all repercussions in an extremely god-fearing country. This is absurdly convenient and lucky even in-universe. The better way would be for him to win money and buy a house, with no way for the gambler to track him down or report him.

@SeryjVolk they would have found out about some of the illegal secrets the house holds, which would have come back to bite him though, as we find out in the later chapters.

First, I doubt people there to purify a demon would be interested in examining the house. Second, he doesn't have to be directly involved, as I mentioned. If it's dangerous for him, he can even abandon the house, what makes no sense is him not reporting the hero to the church to get revenge of some sort.

A bit of elboration on why the old owner likely wouldn't go to the church about Makoto. People have already touched upon the possibility of illegal activity which is an obvious one, but another would be drawing the eyes of the inquisition to yourself. Gambling and other such things that were going on in the tavern would very much be seen as delvilry by the church who would then ask why such people were drawn there in the first place which will then come back to owner. When the inquisition is doing their rounds, you keep your mouth shut and your head down especially if you have something to hide.

"Devil king" in medieval Europe lol. Pretty sure he might delay the industrial revolution with his witches revolution. With people trying to do figure out his magic which are perfected modern techniques instead of figuring out how to make a machine to do work aka the steam engine. Maybe they'll think the steam engine is also magic so guess that's fine too.
