I feel like I got a sense of how the nighlife industry in Japan remains stable. People are crushed by an intensely-unfriendly society that has huge expectations and little actual support. Friends and family are in short supply, because everyone is just overwhelmed. So everyone looks for affection where they can get it: games, sex, anime, etc.

Slowly that source becomes the only light in their world. If you have money, you might be alright, but the ones without money get sucked into the other side of that equation. They become the providers of affection so they can keep buying.

And once they stop being able to provide, they can no longer survive.
