Japanese authors, and to a lesser extent genre fiction writers worldwide, seem to love making the mistake of trying to redeem a villain who has been established as doing things that are completely unforgivable. If he wanted to redeem the cat girl then he should have had her be a morally neutral thief who only steals from people who can afford it or sells bandits into slavery or something of that nature, not a straight up slaver who has destroyed hundreds of random innocent lives. She's objectively more evil than a serial killer! I just try to ignore it at this point, it happens too often in too many stories to let it be a dealbreaker. I still have to shake my head and wonder wtf they were thinking every time it happens though.
This whole arc might as well be a dream sequence anyway.
