I figure it's the elders or that old dude in the bar. They probably figured out who the real hero is and then tried nonviolently to get the Big guy to hand over the title to the kid and when that didn't work, went with violence and she accidently died in their custody.

It's barely a trope at this point, men can be at each other's throats and be best friends 5 minutes later, it's probably a part of our native survival instinct, since surviving a battle against a enemy likely meant either you or they would likely have switched sides or come to some kind of peace, willingly or not, in ancient warfare.
