I'm fairly certain arbitrarily splitting chapters differently from the sources is against the Mangadex rules.

If you cannot even bother to do the full chapter, don't even start it. We have waited this long already, we can wait some more for a complete chapter even if translated by a machine.

why do some translators do this? they find an abandoned series and instead of picking it up where the last group left it they start it a couple chapters after they left it so we can't even read it and understand the context of anything happening.

You are correct.

3.2.2 Chapters may only be split into parts if the source material was also split in the same way. Chapters that have been split up by the scanlators for any other reason may be recombined into singular whole chapters.
