It's has always been more culturally acceptable for an older woman to court a younger man then for an older male to persue a young lady.

Think that's because those older men are typically either protrayed as handsome looking playboys who manipulate women to achieve their goals and or maintain their lifestyle, or the fugly bastard who threaten their victims and then go straight to abuse and torture.

Cougars, or older women who pursue younger men OTOH, tend to be protrayed as beautiful cherryboi hunters who care less about a long term relationship, and focuses more on one night stands, or the plain yet attractive widow / spinster who is desperately lonely that never expected to find love, but stumbles face first into a younger man's affections.

True there are all the variations of in between archetypes for both sexes, but those are the most common in the last 50 odd years of reading experience.

While there is a case to be made that the manipulative playboy above would qualify, they tend to come from money or nobility so generally have that to fall back on.
