It's weird how far the manga is behind the anime, it really goes into every single detail. I didn't check if there is a novel yet, hm.

Forget the church arc (its still good) that difference with whats his name (im bad with names lol) is amazing. He's still cognizent enough to realize he's being manipulated. That alone makes him soo much better than the anime.

He's honestly quite the tragic character. His heart wasn't in the wrong place, but his ego was, and his ego drove his communication skills.
