I'm thinking it's more of a conversion.

Shadow + absorbing a bunch of negative emotions = bloated shadow

Ichima + bloated shadow = charged up Ichima + shadow

Charged up Ichima + a bunch of little furry nezumi = Ichima + a smaller number of larger nezumi

Large nezumi + damage = a bunch of little furry nezumi

The overall amount of nezumi might actually be constant.
