Yes, they weren't close before. But the field trip made them closer.
And Yuuri wanted a friend to the point she sacrificed her reading time.
But while Makoto was being genuine to her, Yuuri was still hiding something that is somewhat related to her. So, if Yuuri wanted to be closer to her, she felt like she needed to open up herself.

Same. I mostly read yuri, but someone told me this was good so I decided to check it out. Then we get these lovely yuri-tinted scenes between Makoto and Yuuri that makes me wish this was a yuri manga.
